Denver radio host Peter Boyles kicked off a heated controversy by taking issue with sports fans using the collective “we” rather than “they” when talking about the Colorado Rockies or other favorite team. “I’ve always thought it was silly,” Boyles told a local columnist, explaining that he views the whole thing as some sort of pseudo-religious tribalism.
I have my own opinion, though.
Why do Colorado Rockies fans say “we won”? Because it takes too long to say this:
“The locally owned and operated professional sports franchise to whom I choose to assign my enthusiastic brand loyalty for the purposes of entertainment made even more enjoyable by the virtual affiliation it creates with many thousands of similarly inclined area residents has won the game. The operating success of these highly compensated athletes thus makes me happy, albeit in an admittedly superficial context that while adding no actual intrinsic value to my life is a whole lot more fun than listening to radio talk show hosts drone on about what’s wrong with the world and the silly people who populate it.”
There. Now let’s go win the World Series.
